Fred Allen (b. John Florence Sullivan, May 31, 1894, Cambridge, Massachusetts; d. March 17, 1956, New York City) was an American comedian whose absurdist, pointed radio show of 1934-1949 was one of the most popular in the so-called classic era of American radio.

Though he may be remembered best for his on-air "feud" with fellow comedian Jack Benny, Fred Allen was one of the most accomplished and daring humourists of radios classic era. He was the mediums unchallenged ad-lib master, he battled censorship, he created routines whose style and substance influenced several future comic generations, and wielded an influence that outlasted radios heyday as Americas primary home entertainment.
