Actress of the silver screen, stage and television. Holds the record for Best Actress Oscar wins (4) and was only recently overtaken for her 12 nominations garnered over a 48-year period. Five decades a screen actress, winning an Oscar for her first nominated role (Morning Glory 1933) and an Oscar for her last (On Golden Pond 1981). The other two were for Guess Whos Coming To Dinner (1967) and The Lion In Winter (1968). She originated the role of Tracy Samantha Lord in The Philadelphia Story onstage, going on to stage a triumphant comeback to Hollywood from her late-1930s ox-office poison period with the film version. Possibly the American actress with the greatest stage experience in Shakespeare, having played Shakespearean heroines from Rosalind in As You Like It (1950) through to Cleopatra in Antony & Cleopatra (1960). Always one to face up to challenges (and seek them when none were forthcoming), Kate also starred in a Broadway musical (Coco 1969-70). She turned to television films, mostly prestige projects, in the 1970s and 80s, most memorable among them being Love Among The Ruins (1975), her second-to-last film with favourite director and close friend George Cukor. She has written her autobiography, Me: Stories Of My Life, which was a bestseller.
